Abstract

The necessity and organizational mechanisms of engaging the institutional investors to addressing the problems of financial support for sustainable development and control over the compliance of companies’ activities with the principles of sustainable development has been considered. The problems that hinder the assurance of sustainable development in Ukraine have been justified; there are the absence of relevant legislation and fundamental sustainable development strategy among them. Taking into account the substantial amounts of the investments needed and their long-term nature, the particular role of sovereign wealth funds in solving the tasks of environmental activity of energy companies has been emphasized. Through the example of positive experience of the most progressive sovereign funds in regulating and control of the activity of the major companies in the field of compliance with the principles of sustainable development the necessity of adopting the full-fledged sustainable development strategy by Ukraine and involving oil and gas companies and other environmentally hostile traditional energy companies into its implementation has been justified.
