ECONOMICS IN A TRANSFORMING GLOBAL ECONOMY
Abstract
Economic theory is one of the oldest academic disciplines, which looks into the human activity related to the production and use of the material foundations of society. Fundamental economic theory provides a systematic scientific perspective, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the economic reality of society, explaining the behavior of economic agents, and revealing the complex interaction of factors shaping economic development and the functioning of economic systems. Economics, as a fundamental social science, examines the efficient utilization of scarce resources to maximize the satisfaction of human material needs. Economics is seen as a neoclassical approach within economic thought, which synthesizes elements of classical political economy and marginalism. As a dynamic discipline, economics is oriented toward the study of economic reality, with its subject area continuously evolving and its research agenda and methodology expanding. The evolutionary development of economic theory and economics is driven by structural transformations in the global economy. It is argued that economic theory is currently characterized by a complex interdependence with processes of economic reality and serves as a foundation for the conceptual and analytical representation of economic reality within the system of scientific knowledge. It is pointed out that the contradictory nature of contemporary economic development requires a renewed understanding of economics and its methodological tools. In addition, it should be based on interdisciplinary and interparadigmatic approaches to address global challenges. Economics should serve as the foundational discipline of modern economic education, particularly at the national university level, thereby enhancing educational quality, increasing its attractiveness, and strengthening the international competitiveness of graduates of Ukrainian higher education institutions. The study also proposes strengthening students’ knowledge of economics in higher education in order to ensure its effective application in academic, professional, and research contexts within the conditions of global and national economic transformation.
